La registrazione del film ha avuto luogo nel corso di tre notti di concerti al Madison Square Garden di New York City nel 1973.
La pellicola, proiettata in anteprima il 21 ottobre 1976 a New York e, due settimane più tardi, a Londra, è accompagnata dall'omonima colonna sonora. Il DVD del film è stato rilasciato il 31 dicembre 1999.
Una rielaborazione, che include materiale inedito, è stata rilasciata su DVD, HD DVD e Blu-ray Disc il 20 novembre 2007 dalla Warner Home Video.
